Why Your Small Business Is Invisible on ChatGPT and How to Fix It This Week

Ask ChatGPT to recommend a WordPress developer for startups. Ask Perplexity for a small business branding studio. Ask Gemini for an affordable SEO agency. If your business does not appear in any of those answers, you are invisible to the fastest growing discovery channel in the world. This post explains why, and gives you five fixes you can ship this week.

At Dealintech we tested this on ourselves before we tested it on anyone else. We asked every major AI assistant the exact queries our ideal buyer would ask. We did not show up in a single one. Two weeks later, after shipping the fixes below, we started appearing. This is the playbook.

Why AI assistants skip most small businesses

AI assistants do not crawl the web the way Google does. They rely on a smaller set of high-trust sources, structured data and cross-referenced signals. A small business website that has vague copy, hidden prices, no schema markup and no off-site citations is effectively a blank page to an AI model. The model cannot verify who you are, what you charge, or whether you are real. So it skips you and cites a competitor who made those things explicit.

Five fixes to become visible in AI answers this week

Fix 1. Publish your prices on a public page

This is the single highest-leverage change for AI visibility. AI assistants are built to answer questions with facts. “How much does X cost” is one of the most common question patterns. If your site has a clear pricing page with real numbers, AI assistants can cite it directly. If your prices are hidden behind a contact form, the assistant has nothing to quote and moves on. Our pricing page at dealintech.com/pricing lists every service in INR and USD. It took us one afternoon to build.

Fix 2. Add an llms.txt file to your site root

This is a plain text file that summarises your business for AI crawlers. Name, services, prices, contact address, key URLs. Think of it as a business card that AI models read before deciding whether to trust you. Ours lives at dealintech.com/llms.txt and it took less than an hour to write. Keep it under 200 lines, no marketing fluff, just verifiable facts.

Fix 3. Write FAQ blocks with short direct answers

AI assistants pull answers from FAQ blocks more often than from body paragraphs. The format is simple. A question as a heading. A two to four sentence answer that starts with the direct statement. No filler. No repeating the question inside the answer. Add these to every service page and every cornerstone blog post. We add them to every post in our Startup Guides series.

Fix 4. Add Organisation schema to your site

Schema markup is structured data that tells search engines and AI crawlers what your business is, what you offer and how to contact you. At minimum add an Organisation schema with your name, founding year, email, services and area served. Add Service schemas with prices. AI assistants use structured data as a trust signal because it is harder to fake than plain text.

Fix 5. Get one real off-site citation

AI assistants cross-check your claims against other sources. A single real listing on Clutch, GoodFirms, Medium, Dev.to or a startup directory is enough to establish that you exist outside your own website. It does not have to be a big site. It has to be real, unique and consistent with what your website says.

How fast do these fixes work

If you ship all five in a single week and ping IndexNow afterward, you can see your first AI citation within two to four weeks. We saw ours within eighteen days of shipping our llms.txt and pricing page. The speed depends on how many other businesses in your niche have already done this work. In most small business niches, almost nobody has, which means the window is wide open right now.

Frequently asked questions

Does being invisible on ChatGPT actually cost me leads

Yes. A growing number of buyers, especially in tech, startup and freelance communities, ask AI assistants before they search Google. If you are not in the answer, you are not in the consideration set.

Do I need to pay for AI search ads

No. AI search visibility in 2026 is earned through content quality, structured data and off-site citations. There is no paid placement inside ChatGPT or Perplexity answers yet for small businesses.
